Ready for Livestock?
If you are a new farmer looking to add new or different livestock to your farm, this program may be for you! I can assist you through the step-by-step process of making a road map to success. This is a general overview of what I take clients through, however, I customize according to your needs.
Step One - Livestock Overview
I'll walk you through a more detailed livestock overview (including what’s required for care), so you can decide what livestock is best for you to start with in your first year and plan for additional livestock in the future.
Step Two - Pick a Species or Two
I will guide you with:
- Deciding which species will be best suited for your lifestyle and goals
- Help you pick out one or two breeds
- Decide by when you want the livestock on the property
- Determine where you will source them and find out if they’re available
- Cover areas like availability, practicality, price, etc.
(Depending on your needs, some animals, seeds, trees, etc, may need to be ordered many months or even a year in advance to ensure availability.)
Step Three - Basic Nutrition and Care
You will learn about:
- Basic nutrition and care required for the selected livestock
- Where to source the feed and bedding for these animals
Step Four - Ensure Basic Needs
It is imperative to ensure the basic needs of the animals are in place before purchasing livestock. For example, you may need to build or purchase – gates, fences, shelters, feeders, waterers, supplement feeders, etc. Can help you to acquaint yourself with a local veterinarian for emergencies.
Step Five - Purchase Livestock
We will assist you as required to purchase the livestock and get them settled into their new home.
Step Six - Basic Handling Procedures
- Ensure care and safety of the livestock
- Basic handling procedures
- Feeding/Bedding
- Predator protection
- How to be observant, signs to look out for
- Health and safety - discover issues quickly
- How to be connected spiritually with the animals and land
The number of hours that would be required to cover all this content is contingent on the level of support you will require.
