The Pyrenean Mastiff Breed

Champion Gandalf De La Tierra Alta

Gandalf de la Tierra Alta, Pyrenean Mastiff Stud

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a rare, giant-sized, ancient breed of livestock guardian dog originating in the Spanish Pyrenees Mountains.  They were a fearless, loyal guardian and guide to the shepherds and sheep pasturing in the rough mountainous regions.

In addition to livestock guardian and family companions, some excel as service or therapy dogs.

Puppy Champion ColourFast Brandybuck

In the last century, they almost became extinct due to the decline of the predators in the mountains.  They were known as a wolf and bear killer. The breed was saved in the 1970s and is flourishing in Spain and throughout the world both as livestock guardian dogs and family companions.

ColourFast Celandine (aka Spotty)

Puppy Champion ColourFast Brandybuck

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a dog of loyal and honest character and an excellent protector of children and family.  For those who would dare challenge the temperament of this breed - watch out!  Although always friendly and alert, the Pyrenean Mastiff has the ability to defend itself and those in its charge should the need arise!

ColourFast Donnamira

Donnamira, Pyrenean Mastiff Female wearing a red scarf

It is very calm dog and has not inherited the "hair-trigger" or stubborn personality of many other guardian breeds.  The Pyrenean Mastiff is a dog happy to please her owner and enjoys his owners company.

Champion Éowyn De La Tierra Alta

They are intelligent and have a very loving temperament.  Average height at the withers for males is 32 inches/81 cm and 29 1/2 inches/75 cm for females. Well bred Pyrenean Mastiffs have a long healthy life expectancy of 12 or more years!

The Basque Shepherd Dog (Gorbeiakoa Variety)

Argibel, The only Basque Shepherd in Canada

Euskal Artzain Txakurra (Gorbeiakoa Variety)

The Basque Shepherd Dog (also known as Pastor Vasco) is an extremely rare, loyal, exceptionally intelligent herding dog breed.   They originate from the Basque Country in Spain.    They can have yellow eyes or light brown.   We have the only one in Canada.  There are only around 300 in the world of this variety!

Our Bordagaray Argibel (above) was imported directly from Spain.  In addition to working around the farm, she also is the first ever Basque Shepherd to hold a title outside of Spain or France - our Canadian Champion!

Male Basque Shepherd

Beautiful Red Coated Male

This is Legun. When he was young, a Basque shepherd (person) brought Legun to California as a working dog. Sadly, his owner passed away but he found a new home working cattle and sheep with an American farmer. He passed away at age 13.
